2020 Acura ILX Vs. 2020 Acura TLX

By Justin Cupler | February 14th, 2020

Here at Acura of Rochester serving Rochester, Henrietta, Pittsford, and the surrounding area, we have two great luxury sedans in the 2020 ILX and 2020 TLX. Both models offer plenty of room, loads of luxury, great value, and surprising performance. Choosing between the two is a tough call, so we’re here to help. Continue reading to see which one is the better option for you.

Exterior

A quick glance, and it is pretty easy to mix up the 2020 Acura ILX and TLX. Up front, both sedans feature the newest Acura signature grille with a 3D diamond design, Jewel Eye LED headlights, bold bumpers, and sharp hoods. They are separated by only a few small details, like the two wider outer air intakes on the TLX’s bumper and the ILX’s wider central air intake.

From their profile views, it is easier to discern these two Japanese luxury cars. The TLX is clearly the longer of the two, and it shows in the elongated trunk area.

In the rear, it is easy to tell the ILX and TLX apart. The TLX includes older, less shapely taillights, a simple rear bumper, and a more traditional, upright trunk lid. The ILX is the sportier of these models, as it features a more forward-leaning trunk lid, thinner taillights, and a rear bumper with aero fins on the bottom.

In terms of standard exterior features, the TLX boasts 17-inch Pewter Gray 10-spoke wheels, a power moonroof, remote-operated windows and moonroof, Jewel Eye LED headlights with auto-on/off, LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, heated side-view mirrors with reverse-gear tilt-down, an acoustic-laminated windshield, and more.

Other than the tilt-down mirrors, the ILX boasts the same standard exterior features as the TLX, adding tons of value to this smaller, lower-priced sedan.

Looking at size, the TLX is significantly larger in every key measurable, just as it should be.

Advantage: 2020 Acura ILX

  •       Smaller and easier to toss around in traffic

Interior

Like the exterior, the interiors of the 2020 Acura ILX and 2020 Acura TLX are almost identical, but there are a few differences to pick up on. The ILX is 2.4 inches narrower than the TLX, and it shows in the center tunnel, as the ILX’s cup holders are behind the shifter instead of next to it and the air vents are pushed outward. The ILX’s dash also features a swoopier design that’s highlighted by an accent piece shooting across the passenger’s side.

The TLX, on the other hand, has its central air vents flanking the On Demand screen, a straighter accent piece on the passenger’s side, a wider center tunnel with the cup holders next to the shifter and a bolder graphic.

While there is not much difference stylistically, there is a lot of separation between these models in their standard features. The ILX’s list of standard goodies includes sport seats, leatherette-trimmed interior, eight-way power driver’s seat with power lumbar support, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless access system, keyless unlock, push-button ignition, power windows with one-touch up/down front windows, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a six-speaker Acura audio system, Bluetooth streaming audio, USB audio interface, MP3 and Pandora compatibility, Siri Eyes Free, SMS text messaging capability, a 5-inch color display, and more.

The 2020 Acura TLX matches all these features and adds a 10-way power driver’s seat, a four-way power passenger’s seat, active noise cancellation, ambient cabin lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a seven-speaker audio system with an 8-inch touchscreen, SiriusXM, Pandora, 7-inch On Demand Multi-Use Display 2.0, Siri Eyes Free, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and much more. Basically, the TLX offers more desirable features in exchange for its extra $7,000 in cost over the ILX.

Though the TLX has more features than the ILX, the vast price gap between them means you can move to the range-topping ILX A-Spec with Technology Package and still save $1,350. Talk about a value proposition.

As for roominess, the TLX wins in virtually every category for obvious reasons. The ILX gets a small win in front-seat headroom by 0.8 inches, but that is far from a reason to it over the TLX.

Advantage: 2020 Acura TLX

  •       More room in every area
  •       Larger trunk
  •       More traditional design
  •       Loads more standard features

Advantage: 2020 Acura ILX

  •       A value proposition
  •       More youthful cabin
  •       Safety features match the TLX

Performance

Under its hood, the Acura ILX has just one engine option, a 2.4-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder that throws 201 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and out to the front wheels for a 6.8-second 0-to-60 sprint.

The TLX has the same base powertrain but with the 2.4-liter engine’s wick turned to 206 horses and 182 pound-feet of torque. The added heft of the TLX pushed the sprint time to 7.2 seconds.

Optionally, the TLX is available with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine that pumps 290 horsepower through a nine-speed automatic transmission. This engine is available with front- or all-wheel drive and sprints the TLX to 60 mph in a lively six seconds.
