By Justin Cupler | October 10th, 2018

Luxury-car shopping in Rochester, New York can be a time-consuming process because of all the options. Here at Acura of Rochester, we can save you time with our two well-equipped and affordable luxury sedans, the compact Acura ILX and midsize Acura TLX.

Which of these sedans is best for you? We put them in a head-to-head battle to find out.

Exterior

The 2019 Acura TLX recently inherited the newest take on the Acura front end that includes a new grille, fascia, and headlights. Thanks to the 2019 TLX’s 109.3-inch wheelbase, which is 4.2 inches longer than the ILX, it delivers a smoother ride on bumpy roads. This larger sedan also swallows passengers and cargo with ease.

The 2018 ILX’s style caters to fans of the older Acura look — it won’t slip into the most recent Acura wardrobe until 2019. At 181.9 inches long and 70.6 inches wide, the Acura ILX is 9.8 inches shorter and 2.4 inches narrower than the 2019 TLX, making it easier to squeeze into tight parking spaces here in Rochester, New York.

2019 Acura TLX Advantages

  • Newest design language
  • Longer wheelbase enhances ride quality

2018 Acura ILX Advantages

  • Smaller footprint makes it great for heavy traffic
  • Tight parking spaces won’t be a problem

Interior

The 2019 TLX’s larger body also makes it easier to bring people and cargo along for the ride to Pittsford or Fairport. The 2019 TLX will treat Rochester, New York car buyers to 14.3 cubic-feet of trunk space, 36.7 inches of rear headroom, 42.6 inches of front legroom, and 34.5 inches of rear legroom. Respectively, these dimensions beat the ILX by 2 cubic feet, 0.8 inches, 0.3 inches, and 0.5 inches.

The 2018 Acura ILX’s interior is far from bad, though it falls short of the TLX in some areas. The 2018 ILX’s cabin matches many of the TLX’s key features while delivering a lower prices across the board. Also, despite being significantly smaller, the ILX’s 38 inches of front headroom is 0.8 inches better than the TLX.

2019 Acura TLX Advantages

  • More upscale appearance
  • Handful of additional features

2018 Acura ILX Advantages

  • Front seats better suited for tall people
  • A lot of value built into base model

Performance

The 2019 Acura TLX jumps off with a small power advantage with its base 2.4-liter engine. This unit produces 206 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque, which are advantages of 5 horsepower and 2 pound-feet over the ILX’s 2.4-liter engine. The TLX also has an extra trick up its sleeve with its optional 3.5-liter V-6 powerplant that injects 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque.

The TLX is also ready to tackle bad weather with its optional all-wheel drive — the ILX is only available with front-wheel drive.

The ILX is light on power relative to the TLX, but it is also lighter on heft. At roughly 500 pounds lighter than its big brother, the ILX is easier to toss around corners. The ILX also has a 2.4-foot smaller turning diameter, making it easier to navigate in tight quarters.

Also, while the TLX is easy on fuel at up to 23 mpg city, 33 highway, and 27 combined, the 2018 ILX is significantly better at 25 mpg city, 35 highway, and 29 combined.*
